Four weeks, not four days: why supplements take time

Reading time 5 min · Level 2: How to judge a supplement

The short answer: Most supplements need four to six weeks before you can judge whether they make a difference. Joint products often longer, stomach products often shorter. It is not because the products are weak, but because of how the body works: cartilage, coat and gut lining are renewed over weeks and months, not days. Whoever gives up after a week has not tested the product. They have tested their own patience.

Why it takes time. Three examples

Joints. The cartilage in a joint has no blood supply of its own and turns over slowly. It shows in the research. In a randomised, double-blind study of 35 dogs with osteoarthritis one group received glucosamine and chondroitin, the other a painkilling medicine. The dogs were examined on days 14, 42 and 70. The medicine worked quickly. The supplement group showed statistically significant improvement only at day 701. Seventy days, not seven.

Fatty acids. In another study dogs with osteoarthritis received food enriched with omega-3 from fish oil. Improved weight bearing on the affected leg, measured with a force plate, was clear at day 902. In a parallel study owners saw the first changes, the dog getting up more easily and playing more, after about six weeks3.

Coat and skin. A hair grows in a cycle measured in weeks and months. What you see in the coat today is the result of what the body had access to several weeks ago. A supplement given from now on therefore cannot show in the coat until the next generation of hairs has grown out.

Key insight: The body's tissues are renewed over weeks and months. A supplement can never act faster than the tissue it is meant to support. Judge after six weeks, not after six days.

Why the stomach often goes faster

The gut lining renews itself considerably faster than cartilage and coat. The cells are replaced in a few days. That is why stomach products are the supplements where owners most often notice something within one to two weeks. But even here: an unsettled stomach that calms down after three days may just as well have calmed down on its own. Only when the pattern holds over several weeks do you know something.

What happens week by week

Roughly this is how it usually looks for most supplements for joints, coat and general balance:

Weeks 1 to 2: nothing visible. The body starts to absorb the ingredients. This is where most people give up, and where there is nothing to give up from.

Weeks 3 to 4: the first small things. Many owners notice something they can barely put into words. The dog gets up a little faster. Hesitates a little less at the stairs. The coat feels different under the hand.

Weeks 5 to 6: the clearest point. If the product is going to work for your pet, this is when you see it most clearly. And if you do not see anything now, that is an honest answer: this product was not right for this animal.

How to judge fairly

Take notes before you start. How long does it take the dog to get up? How many steps does it take without hesitating? How often has the stomach been unsettled in the past month? Write it down. Memory is unreliable, and it is extra unreliable when you are hoping.

Change one thing at a time. If you change food, start a supplement and increase the walks in the same week you will never know what did what.

Give the right dose. The wrong dose is the most common reason for no result. Check the dosage against the animal's weight, not against what feels reasonable.

Compare after six weeks against the notes. Not against the feeling.

Why this is rarely on the packaging

Writing "allow six weeks" on a package sells worse than hinting at a quick effect. That is why few do it. But it also creates a cycle that harms the whole category: pet owners buy, see nothing after a week, stop, and conclude that "supplements do not work". Next time they are sceptical from the start.

We think it is more honest to say it plainly: most of our products need four to six weeks. We publish a timeline on every product page. And our guarantee is 42 days precisely so you have time to see whether it works before you have to decide, not 14 days, which is too short to know anything at all.
